We Analyzed 10,864 Design Job Postings. Here Are the Skills That Set Them Apart.
Key result: Most named role-defining skill: Figma
n = 10,864 active design postings · Updated 2026-10-12
Most “top skills” lists are opinion. This one is data. We took 10,864 active design postings from the 625,168 postings marked active in our index and ranked skills by how much more often they appear in design roles than across the market as a whole. The result is a list of 30 skills that actually define design work, not the generic “communication” and “teamwork” that show up everywhere.

How we built this list
We counted how often each skill appears in design postings, then compared that to how often it appears across all 625,168 jobs in the corpus. Skills that show up everywhere, such as communication, teamwork and benefits, were filtered out because they describe no role in particular. What remains are the skills genuinely characteristic of design work. Each is shown with its ‘market multiple’: how many times more common it is here than in the market at large.
The skills that define the role
The most role-defining skills are Figma (34.6%), Photoshop (20.4%), Graphic Design (18.4%), Typography (17.8%), Illustrator (17.4%), Visual Design (15.5%). Figma is the most named role-defining skill (34.6% of postings), while Cinema 4D is the most distinctive signal, 57.0x more common in design postings than market-wide. Shares count postings whose text names the skill, using only skill tags read from the posting body or title; tags produced by alias expansion or inference are excluded (see snapshot.py, QUERY_VERSION 3). If your resume targets these roles, these are the terms that separate a matching profile from a generic one.
Who is hiring
The most active employers for design roles in the corpus include Apple, JPMorgan Chase, Citi, Bjak, Amazon. Company mix shifts as the corpus refreshes; these reflect the current snapshot of 10,864 active postings.
What this means for your resume
Generic skill bullets get filtered out, by ATS and by recruiters, precisely because they appear on every resume. The skills above are the ones that mark you as a real design candidate. Feature the ones you genuinely have, in context, rather than padding with terms that describe no role.
