Breaking into a field is not one obstacle, it is five, and every field weights them differently. We measured licences, security clearance, citizenship or work authorisation, degrees, and stated years of experience across 231,147 active job postings. No field is hardest on all five. Healthcare demands a licence in 61.4% of postings, more than any other requirement in any other field we measured, and simultaneously asks for the fewest years of experience at 3.7. Marketing gates on almost nothing: 2.9% licence, 0.2% clearance, 22.3% degree. The barrier you face depends entirely on which door you are standing at.

No field is hardest on every axis
Healthcare has the highest single barrier we measured anywhere: 61.4% of its postings state a licence or clinical credential. It also has the lowest experience demand of any field, 3.7 years against 6.5 in engineering and 6.1 in finance. Those two facts describe one gate rather than two. Healthcare screens on whether you hold the credential, and once you hold it, it asks for comparatively little else. Finance inverts that. Only 11.5% ask for a licence, but 42.1% mention a degree, the highest of any field, and the average stated requirement is 6.1 years.
The barrier nobody expects is clearance
Security clearance appears in 5.2% of engineering postings and 5.2% of finance postings, against 0.2% in marketing. That is a 26x spread, and it is invisible if you are not looking for it, because a clearance requirement is not a skill you can acquire by studying. It is a process that requires an employer to sponsor you and can take a year. For a candidate comparing engineering roles, the practical effect is that roughly one posting in twenty is closed regardless of qualification until someone sponsors the clearance.
Marketing and design are the open doors
Marketing gates on almost nothing measurable: 2.9% licence, 0.2% clearance, 2.2% citizenship, 22.3% degree. Design is close behind at 2.2%, 1.1%, 3.4% and 19.2%, the lowest degree rate of any field. If you are changing careers without a credential, these two fields ask for the least documentation of anything we measured. That is not the same as saying they are easy to enter. It means the screening happens somewhere our data cannot see, most likely on portfolio and prior work, which design postings request in 50.3% of cases.
What this means if you are choosing a field
Read down the column that matches your actual constraint rather than looking for the hardest field overall. If you lack a degree, marketing at 22.3% and design at 19.2% cost you least, and finance at 42.1% costs you most. If you cannot obtain a security clearance, engineering and finance each close about one posting in twenty to you. If you hold a clinical credential, healthcare will ask for less experience than any other field in the corpus. The question is never which field is hardest. It is which barrier you personally cannot clear.
How we measured it (and what we did not claim)
We counted explicit mentions across the 200,628 active postings with a substantive description, grouped by our own domain classifier. Licence detection was validated by hand: 11 of 11 sampled healthcare matches were genuine professional licensure. Clearance, citizenship and degree patterns were not individually hand validated, so treat those three as approximate and the relative differences between fields as the reliable part, since the same detector is applied identically to every field. Years of experience comes from a derived field present on 41.9% of postings, and it carries a known limitation: its minimum value is 1, so it is structurally blind to postings requiring no experience and the averages are therefore an overstatement of the true requirement. Absence of a mention is not proof that a requirement does not exist, since employers apply policies they do not print. Roughly half of descriptions are truncated at 5,000 characters, which can only remove requirement text, never add it, so every figure here is a floor.
