Engineering Isn't One Labor Market. React Is in 9.5% of Engineering Jobs and 76% of Front-End Jobs.

We set out to answer a simple question: which technologies do engineering employers actually ask for? The answer looked like nonsense. Across 71,311 active engineering postings, no technology appeared in even a quarter of them. Python led at 24.6%. React was under 10%. Kubernetes 10%. That reads like a market with no consensus at all, where learning anything specific is a coin flip. It isn’t. The flatness was an artifact of treating “engineering” as one labor market. Split it into the specialties employers actually hire for and the consensus is overwhelming. React is in 75.9% of front-end postings, SQL in 73.4% of data-engineering postings, Kubernetes in 51.8% of DevOps postings. The technologies didn’t become more common. We stopped averaging ten different jobs together.

The same number, twice, and both are right
React appears in 9.5% of engineering job postings. React appears in 75.9% of front-end job postings. Those come from the same corpus, the same detector, the same day. Neither is a mistake. The gap is entirely the population you point the question at. That pattern repeats across every specialty we could isolate. SQL runs 13.9% pooled and 73.4% inside data engineering. Kubernetes 10.0% and 51.8% inside DevOps and platform roles. C/C++ 5.5% and 48.9% inside embedded. Java 11.5% and 40.1% inside backend. The smallest of those effects is 3.5×, the largest 8.9×. If you only ever look at the pooled view, every one of these technologies looks like a niche skill that most employers don’t want.
What each engineering submarket actually asks for
Front-end asks for React, in 75.9% of postings. Data engineering asks for SQL at 73.4% and Python at 66.9%, the only specialty where two technologies are both near-universal. Fullstack: React 64.8%. ML and AI: Python 53.4%. DevOps and platform: Kubernetes 51.8%. Embedded: C/C++ 48.9%. Backend splits between Java at 40.1% and Python at 31.5%, the one specialty with a real language choice to make. These lists barely overlap. React is in 75.9% of front-end postings and 1.7% of embedded ones. Kubernetes is in 51.8% of DevOps postings and 0.5% of hardware and physical-engineering roles. Two people can both be “engineers,” both be in demand, and share almost nothing on the requirements list.
Two specialties stay fragmented, and that is the same finding
Not every submarket concentrates, and the exceptions make the point better than the rule. Mobile stays split: React 22.8%, Java 20.4%, nothing near a majority. That is because mobile is still two markets underneath, iOS and Android, so the same aggregation problem applies one level down. Hardware and physical engineering is the sharper case: Kubernetes 0.5%, SQL 1.7%, Java 2.8%. Software technology barely registers, because these are electrical, mechanical, civil and silicon roles that share a domain tag with software and nothing else. They were sitting in the pooled average the whole time, dragging every software technology’s share down.
What to do with this
The common question, “what’s the best language to learn to get into engineering?”, has no answer at the engineering level, and that is not because the market is chaotic. It is because the question skips a step. One level down, the answer is nearly written out for you. Pick front-end and the corpus says React, in three out of four postings. Pick data engineering and it says SQL and Python together. Pick embedded and it says C and C++. The sequence most people use is backwards: learn a popular technology, then look for jobs, which leaves you competing in a market you didn’t choose. Choose the market first and the list of what to learn gets short, specific, and verifiable against real postings.
How we measured it (and what we didn’t claim)
We took 71,311 active postings tagged engineering with a description over 500 characters, then kept the 42,599 whose job title is actually technical: engineer, developer, architect, programmer, scientist, technician. That filter matters. 40% of postings in the engineering tag don’t have a technical title at all, including account executives, customer success managers and a treasury manager, and they were flattening every pooled figure. We then assigned each remaining posting to a specialty by title, most specific first, and measured technology mentions with identical patterns across every population, pooled and segmented alike, so the comparison isn’t an artifact of using a stricter detector on one side. Of the technical-title postings, 26,592 land in a named specialty and 16,007 don’t. Titles like “Senior Software Engineer” carry no specialty signal, which is also why front-end shows only 677 postings while plenty of front-end work is posted as generic software engineering. So the claim is that where a coherent specialty can be identified, technology concentration is dramatically higher than the pooled market suggests. It is not that every engineering job belongs to one of these buckets. Every figure counts explicit mentions in the posting text, so all of them are floors rather than true usage, and roughly half of descriptions in this corpus are truncated at 5,000 characters, which can only remove requirements, never add them.
