Staff Engineer Postings and Engineering Manager Postings Ask for Different Jobs
Key result: Staff postings mentioning direct reports: 1.6%
Based on 33,429+ analyzed job listings · Updated 2026-10-05
The common picture of an engineering career is a ladder where staff engineer sits one rung below management. The postings do not describe that ladder. Staff and principal engineer postings mention direct reports 1.6% of the time, and no source we measured goes above 3.3%. Engineering manager postings mention direct reports 29.7% of the time, and that figure is an undercount. Going from senior engineer to engineering manager, postings add people work: performance management, roadmaps and mentoring. Going from senior to staff, they add influence. Architecture sits in about two thirds of both staff and manager postings, so it separates staff from senior, not staff from manager.

Each percentage is the share of postings in that title group whose text uses the phrase. Groups: senior individual contributor 1,233 postings, staff or principal individual contributor 568, engineering manager 239. Manager comparisons use the four sources with at least 30 engineering manager postings: Himalayas 67, Greenhouse 64, Amazon 33, Workday 32. The influence comparison uses Ashby, Google, Greenhouse, Himalayas and Workday.

The finding
Staff engineer and engineering manager postings describe different jobs, not adjacent steps on one ladder. Direct reports appear in 1.6% of staff or principal engineer postings and 29.7% of engineering manager postings. The staff figure stays at or below 3.3% on every source, so it is not one board pulling the average down.
Senior to manager: the people work appears
Compared with senior engineer postings, engineering manager postings mention performance management far more often (2.0% to 23.0%), roadmaps (13.4% to 53.6%) and mentoring (38.1% to 79.5%). Each of the three rises on all four sources with at least 30 manager postings: Himalayas, Greenhouse, Amazon and Workday. The rises survive two controls: they hold after accounting for posting length, since manager postings could simply be longer and mention more of everything, and they hold in a software-only subset of titles.
Senior to staff: influence appears, reports do not
Influence language rises from 15.1% of senior postings to 34.5% of staff postings, and the rise holds on all five sources we checked: Ashby, Google, Greenhouse, Himalayas and Workday. Architecture appears in 66.2% of staff postings and 66.1% of manager postings. It is part of what separates staff from senior, but it does not separate staff from manager.
How many manager postings describe a player-coach role
A keyword match for hands-on and coding language overstates how many manager roles involve writing code, so we hand-read 30 engineering manager postings that matched. 14 described the role itself as hands-on or player-coach. 9 only asked for hands-on experience with a technology. 7 were false matches, for example on the phrase coding standards. Applied to the share of manager postings that match the signal, that works out to roughly 1 in 5 engineering manager postings that explicitly describe a player-coach role. With 30 postings read the interval around that is wide, so we report it as a rough figure only.
How we measured it (and what we did not claim)
Population: one read-only pass over 33,429 active postings with full text, snapshot 2026-10-04, sampled from Seeker's corpus of job boards and employer career sites. The largest sources are Himalayas, Workday, Greenhouse, Amazon and Ashby. Engineering titles were classified by pattern matching on the title into senior individual contributor (1,233 postings), staff or principal individual contributor (568) and engineering manager (239). Title patterns misclassify some roles. Each signal is a text pattern on the posting description, and every rate is a share of postings in the group. Limitations. First, the direct-reports pattern catches some sources' wording better than others: among engineering manager postings it matches 6.1% on Amazon and 10.9% on Greenhouse but 38.8% on Himalayas and 43.8% on Workday, so 29.7% understates how many manager roles actually have reports. Second, the influence gap between staff and manager postings reverses on Workday, so we do not use influence to separate staff from manager. Third, this is what postings say, not what the job is day to day. We make no claim about pay for either track, and we do not claim that half of engineering manager jobs require hands-on work.
Frequently asked questions
Is staff engineer a step toward engineering manager?
Not in the postings. 1.6% of staff or principal engineer postings mention direct reports, against 29.7% of engineering manager postings. Staff postings add influence language instead, which rises from 15.1% of senior postings to 34.5% of staff postings.
Do engineering manager postings require direct reports?
29.7% of the 239 engineering manager postings we measured mention direct reports. That is a floor: the pattern matches 6.1% of Amazon manager postings but 43.8% of Workday manager postings, because sources word it differently.
Do engineering managers write code?
Roughly 1 in 5 engineering manager postings explicitly describe a player-coach role. That comes from a hand-read of 30 manager postings that matched hands-on language: 14 described the role as hands-on, 9 only asked for hands-on experience with a technology, and 7 were false matches.
Is architecture a staff skill or a manager skill?
Both. Architecture appears in 66.2% of staff postings and 66.1% of manager postings. It separates staff from senior engineers, not staff from managers.
