How Much of a Job Posting Is Actually Required?

Key result: Median required items per posting: 11

n = 9,079 active postings with a recognised required-qualifications section · Published 2026-10-04 · Updated 2026-10-05

Most job postings mix two lists: what the employer requires and what it would like. We split the qualifications in 9,079 active postings that label the two sections clearly. The median posting still lists 11 required items, so the required list alone is substantial. But about 7 in 10 postings also include preferred items, 14.3% of postings that state a years-of-experience figure list it only as preferred, and about 6 in 10 postings that name a certification such as PMP, CPA or CISSP list it only as preferred. The longer the posting, the larger the preferred share. A parsing issue we found after publishing means the preferred shares here are lower bounds; see the correction note below.

The required list is real, and it is long

Separating the lists does not make requirements disappear. The median posting in this set lists 11 required items (mean 13.4), and the median is similar across the three sources we could measure: 12 on Himalayas, 11 on Greenhouse and 8 on Ashby. In 14.6% of postings the preferred section is longer than the required one (13.1% on Himalayas, 17.3% on Greenhouse). The practical point is not that requirements are optional. It is that a missing item counts very differently depending on which list it is on.

Years of experience are sometimes only preferred

Among 7,488 postings that place a years-of-experience figure inside a labelled section, 14.3% put it only under preferred qualifications. The share is 19.0% for titles that say junior, entry, associate or graduate (n=163) and 13.1% for director-level titles (n=624). By field it ranges from 8.4% in engineering (n=1,468) to 20.2% in sales (n=971) and 25.2% in customer support (n=159). Most years figures are still required: 76.8% of postings with no seniority word in the title list them as required.

Certifications are the most often negotiable ask

Across 606 postings that name a certification (PMP, CPA, CISSP, ITIL, Six Sigma, CompTIA or an AWS certification), 59.9% list every named certification only as preferred. The rate is similar on the two sources with enough data: 58.7% on Himalayas (n=506) and 56.9% on Greenhouse (n=58). For individual credentials we only have enough postings on one source: PMP 68.5% (n=181), CISSP 63.6% (n=121), CPA 61.4% (n=127). This does not mean certifications do not matter. It means a missing credential that the posting itself calls preferred is not automatically disqualifying.

Longer postings are mostly longer wish lists

From the shortest postings to the longest, the average number of required items grows about 2.4 times while the average number of preferred items grows about 7.6 times. So much of the additional length in long postings comes from preferred qualifications rather than required ones. The direction holds within each of the three sources we measured. Longer postings do still list more requirements, so length alone does not tell you a role is easier.

What we tested and did not find

We did not find that remote postings have larger wish lists (one source showed it, another did not), that wish-list size predicts the advertised salary (correlations near zero on both sources tested), or that preferred years are generally higher than required years (among 234 postings stating both, 43.2% were higher, 26.5% equal and 30.3% lower). We do not publish employer rankings from this data because heading formats vary by employer and some are misread by our parser.

Correction note: these preferred shares are lower bounds

These preferred shares are lower bounds. After publishing, we found that our section parser read headings worded 'Preferred Skills and Experience' or 'Desired Skills and Experience' as required, so for employers using those headings, preferred items were counted as required. The error only runs one way: the true preferred shares are the same or higher, and the required count is slightly overstated. Bounding it from the affected employers in our sample, the share of postings with preferred items would rise from 70.8% to at most about 73%. We will re-measure with the corrected parser.

How we measured it (and what we did not claim)

Snapshot of 4 October 2026: a random sample of 33,429 active postings with full text from Seeker's corpus. We split each posting into qualification items using its section headings (required or minimum qualifications, preferred or nice to have, and similar) and inline cues such as 'is a plus'. The analysis uses the 9,079 postings where a required-qualifications heading was recognised, from Himalayas, Greenhouse and Ashby. Workday and Amazon postings are excluded because their stored text does not keep line breaks, so items cannot be counted. Our heading detector found 93.3% of postings that literally contain 'Preferred Qualifications'. Benefits and equal-opportunity text that some employers place after the preferred heading is excluded from skill counts. These figures describe what postings say, not what employers enforce, and they come from one snapshot.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between required and preferred qualifications?

Required (or minimum, or basic) qualifications are what the employer says a candidate must have. Preferred qualifications are what it would like to see. In 9,079 postings that separate the two, the median lists 11 required items, and 7 in 10 also list preferred items.

Do I need a certification if the job posting says it is preferred?

Not necessarily. Of 606 postings that name a certification such as PMP, CPA or CISSP, 59.9% list it only as preferred. A missing preferred credential is not automatically disqualifying, though it can still help.

Are years of experience always required?

Usually, but not always. Of 7,488 postings that place a years figure in a labelled section, 14.3% list it only as preferred, and 19.0% for junior titles.
