DevOps engineers build and maintain the systems that let software teams ship reliably. CI/CD pipelines, container orchestration, infrastructure automation, and monitoring are the core responsibilities. The field has expanded into Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) and Platform Engineering, both of which command premium salaries. DevOps is one of the few engineering disciplines where on-call experience and operational maturity are valued as highly as coding ability.

Entry paths
Systems Administration / IT Operations
The original DevOps entry path. Sysadmins who automate repetitive tasks, manage deployments, and handle incidents are already doing DevOps work. Adding CI/CD pipeline experience, Docker, and infrastructure as code formalizes what you already know. Most DevOps engineers over 30 started as sysadmins.
Software Engineering (Backend / Full-Stack)
Developers who care about deployment, reliability, and infrastructure naturally move toward DevOps or SRE. If you have written Dockerfiles, configured GitHub Actions, or debugged production incidents, you have DevOps experience. The gap is typically depth in networking, Linux administration, and monitoring systems.
QA / Test Automation
QA engineers who build test automation frameworks understand CI/CD pipelines from the testing side. The transition to DevOps involves expanding from test infrastructure to deployment infrastructure. This path is underrated and produces DevOps engineers who care deeply about reliability and quality gates.
Help Desk / IT Support (Long Path)
IT support to sysadmin to DevOps is a 2-4 year path but a well-traveled one. Each step builds on the previous. Linux certifications (RHCSA), cloud certifications (AWS SAA), and hands-on lab practice accelerate the timeline. The advantage is deep operational intuition that is hard to teach.
Demand percentages reflect how often each skill appears in DevOps job listings.
GitLab, GitHub, CircleCI, Datadog, PagerDuty, HashiCorp, and Grafana Labs build DevOps tooling and hire heavily. Every engineering organization above 20 engineers has DevOps or platform engineering roles. Google, Netflix, Meta, and LinkedIn pioneered SRE as a discipline and continue to hire at scale. Financial services firms (JPMorgan, Capital One) run large DevOps teams for regulatory and reliability requirements.
