Job search assumes a shared vocabulary that does not exist. We grouped every title in a corpus of about 250,000 active postings into families of the same underlying role. One number captured the problem: 1,075 distinct job titles roll up to a single role, software engineer. Across the whole market we found 15,795 title families for what is really a far smaller set of actual jobs.

One job, a thousand names
The worst offender is 'software engineer'. In our data, 1,075 different job titles all describe it: Software Engineer, Software Engineer II, Software Development Engineer, Backend Engineer, Full-Stack Engineer, and a thousand more small variations. A person reads all of those as the same job. A keyword search reads them as 1,075 different jobs. And it is not just engineering. Product manager had 365 variations, technical program manager 296. The table above shows how deep it goes.
Why it quietly shrinks your search
When you search a job board or LinkedIn for your exact title, you only see the postings that happen to use your exact words. Everything filed under a different name is invisible to you. A backend engineer who searches 'Backend Engineer' never sees the 'Platform Engineer' or 'Services Engineer' roles that want the same skills. You are not missing those jobs because you are unqualified. You are missing them because the search box speaks one dialect and the market speaks a thousand.
How to search around it
Two habits help. First, search by skills, not just a title. Skills are far more consistent across postings than titles are, so a search like 'Kubernetes, Go, distributed systems' surfaces roles a single title never would. Second, search a small cluster of related titles instead of one. If you are a backend engineer, also try platform, infrastructure, services, and 'software engineer, backend'. You will roughly double what you see.

We grouped raw job titles into families by the underlying role rather than the exact words, then counted how many distinct title strings landed in each family, across about 250,000 active postings. Seniority and specialization variants (like 'II', 'Senior', or 'Backend') are counted inside the family, because employers use them interchangeably in practice. The counts are of distinct titles, not of postings.
