Fintech is rebuilding financial infrastructure with software. Payments, lending, insurance, wealth management, and compliance are all being re-engineered by companies that need both domain expertise and technical skill. Series A through C companies drive most of the hiring, and the combination of Python, SQL, and financial domain knowledge is the most bankable skill set in the sector.

Entry paths
Traditional Finance (Banking, Insurance, Asset Management)
The most direct path. Domain expertise in financial products, risk, compliance, and operations transfers almost one-to-one. Fintech companies actively recruit from banks and insurers for roles in financial ops, compliance, and product strategy. 55-70% of skills transfer directly.
Software Engineering (Backend / Data)
Engineers with Python, SQL, and API experience can move into fintech by targeting payments infrastructure, data engineering, or platform teams. Financial domain knowledge is learned on the job. The technical bar is high but the domain ramp is 3-6 months.
Data Analytics / Business Intelligence
Analysts who can model unit economics, build dashboards, and run A/B tests are critical at Series A-C fintechs. SQL proficiency is table stakes. Python for automation and statistical analysis is the differentiator. Add financial product knowledge and you become a fintech product analyst.
Compliance / Legal / Regulatory
Regtech is one of the fastest-growing fintech subsectors. If you understand KYC/AML, BSA, state licensing, or SEC reporting, fintech compliance teams need you. The difference from traditional compliance is pace and tooling, not substance.
Product Management (Adjacent Industries)
PMs with experience in marketplace, SaaS, or consumer products can transition to fintech by demonstrating understanding of financial user flows, compliance constraints, and multi-sided platform dynamics. Prior exposure to regulated industries is a strong differentiator.
Demand percentages reflect how often each skill appears in fintech job listings.
Stripe, Plaid, Square (Block), Brex, Robinhood, Affirm, Chime, and Marqeta are among the largest employers. Thousands of Series A-C companies in payments, lending, insurance, and regtech also hire aggressively. Traditional banks (JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs) now run large internal fintech divisions as well.
