"Remote" Almost Never Means Remote From Anywhere
"Remote" is treated as a single, simple filter: you either want it or you do not. It is not simple. Most listings tagged remote are only remote within one country, and the corpus does not show that as an occasional exception. It is close to the default.
What we measured
We looked at every active listing tagged remote, 213,456 of them, and checked how many countries each one is actually eligible from, using the country data attached to the listing.
Among the listings where we know the country at all (192,240 of them, the rest do not specify), 95.5% name exactly one country. Only 4.5% name more than one. That is roughly 21 single-country listings for every multi-country one. The largest single bucket by far is US-only remote.
We checked whether "remote" is even a reliable tag before trusting it for this: only 0.87% of remote-tagged listings have the word "onsite" anywhere in the title, which is what you would expect to see a lot of if the flag were noisy or mislabeled. It is not. The tag itself holds up.
It is not one industry's quirk, it is structural
The obvious explanation would be that this is a visa or work-authorization thing specific to certain regulated fields (healthcare, government contracting) and looser everywhere else. That is not what we found. Split by field, the single-country share sits in the same tight 92-96% band almost everywhere we checked it, engineering, sales, marketing, finance, design, all of it. Whatever is driving companies to restrict remote roles to one country, it is not specific to a particular kind of work. It is closer to a default assumption baked into how "remote" gets posted at all.
For a closer look at how that restriction rate breaks down field by field, and how we ruled out a source-coverage confound, see the full data report on seekerscore.com/insights.
What does vary a lot: whether a field is remote-eligible in the first place
That is a genuinely different question from the country restriction above, and here the spread is enormous:
| Field | Share of listings tagged remote |
|---|---|
| Hospitality | 2.6% |
| Retail | 6.6% |
| iOS/mobile engineering | 20.3% |
| Hardware | 29.6% |
| Manufacturing | 35.2% |
| Operations | 45.5% |
| Finance | 51.6% |
| Healthcare | 55.9% |
| Career-general | 60.9% |
| Engineering | 64.5% |
| Sales | 76.5% |
| Marketing | 79.0% |
| Education | 89.7% |
That is a roughly 30-to-1 gap between the least and most remote-friendly fields we checked, and it survives a closer look. Healthcare's 55.9% initially looks surprising for a field built on physical presence, but sampling the actual listings shows it is two populations averaged together: bedside clinical roles are close to 0% remote, and telehealth, health-IT, and case-management roles are mostly remote. The blended number is real, it is just not one thing.
What to actually do with this
If you are searching by "remote" as a filter, treat it as two separate questions, not one: is this field remote-friendly at all (check the table above against your field), and which country is this specific listing actually open to (check before assuming "remote" means "from anywhere," because 19 times out of 20 in this data, it does not). A US-based candidate hunting internationally, or an international candidate hoping a "remote" tag means location does not matter, is working against the grain of how these roles are actually structured.
Methodology: analysis of 213,456 actively-tracked remote-tagged listings in Seeker's job corpus as of September 2026. Field-level domain tags were spot-checked against known labeling issues (the hr field's tags are excluded from this analysis due to a previously identified classification bug unrelated to remote-work status).
